Top-ranked, highly selective, and an R1 research university, the Graduate School of Engineering at Northeastern University combines rigorous academics with experiential learning and convergent research to prepare the next generation of engineering leaders to address the complex challenges of global society.
More than 45 Master of Science, Doctor of Philosophy and Graduate Certificates are offered across five engineering departments in traditional disciplines and applied areas of study. PlusOne accelerated master’s degrees are also available for undergraduate students currently enrolled at Northeastern.

Our innovative educational approach, transformative research capabilities, and world-renowned cooperative education program give students the multidisciplinary knowledge and experience to maximize their opportunity for career advancement and success in their chosen field.
Graduate students can participate in our No. 1 ranked signature cooperative education program, which combines rigorous academics with professional practice giving students up to 8 months of employment in their chosen field. Additionally, an Experiential PhD program provides PhD students opportunities such as internships, fellowships, practicums, LEADERs (combines research and professional skills in industry or public sector) and special initiative programs.

Participate in groundbreaking convergent research with our esteemed Faculty in 20 multidisciplinary research centers and institutes funded with eight federal agencies to push the bounds of innovation to new heights.

Flexibility
Our master’s programs have electives and concentrations, as well as a thesis option, while some PhD programs have tracks. Students can choose research areas and experiential learning opportunities that align with their interests. An interdisciplinary PhD program is also available. Select programs are offered part-time, online or in hybrid formats.
Graduate Certificates
A Graduate Certificate is another way for students to personalize their path with a specialization in an area of their choice. Over 15 graduate certificates are available. Certificates can be taken in addition to or in combination with a master’s degree, or provide a pathway to a master’s degree in Northeastern’s College of Engineering. Certificates are also available for PhD students. Students should consult with their faculty advisor regarding these options.

Programs are offered in Boston, Massachusetts—known for high-tech, biotech, and academia—and some are also offered in innovation hubs across Northeastern’s global network in the U.S. and in Canada.

From Co-op to Full-Time: How Northeastern Launched Malaviya’s Career in Cybersecurity
Jainil Malaviya is a current student in the MS in Information Systems program. With a bachelor’s degree in computer science, where he built a strong foundation in programming, data structures, algorithms, and software development, he shares how Northeastern’s co-op program, hands-on coursework, and dedicated mentors helped him land a full-time role as a Security Engineer at Nokia Canada Inc.—before even graduating.
Making AI in Healthcare Reliable with Dr. Burcu Ozek
Dr. Burcu Ozek is currently a Principal AI Scientist at Walkky after completing a PhD in industrial engineering at Northeastern. Looking back at her time with Northeastern, Ozeck shares the value of the LEADERs program and how her hands-on experience gave her the necessary skills to communicate across teams in her work with AI in healthcare.
Where Impact Meets Innovation, Abhiram Elango, MS’25
Abhiram Elango, MS’25, electrical and computer engineering, recently completed his master’s degree at Northeastern. Armed with new confidence and expertise, he is now pursuing roles in wireless communications where he can work closely with customers and see the direct impact of his work.
Spoiled: How One Polymer Could Change the Way We Trust Our Food and Medicine
Tara Arjomandbigdeli, PhD’27, is an interdisciplinary engineering researcher at Northeastern’s eSOIL, a lab where she is developing a heat-sensitive polymer label designed to protect consumers by detecting when temperature-sensitive products like food or medication have spoiled. With plans to launch a startup from her research, she hopes to bring the technology to market—and eventually into every home.
